IntelliTours today launched its catalog of GPS audio tours for Garmin navigators.
The first release of eleven (11) tours includes a driving tour of the U.S. East Coast along Interstate 95, from Boston to Key West, and a bilingual driving or walking tour of San Diego.
The tours are available for download from the company’s Web site, www.intellitours.com. Each tour include up to 45 audio segments and 90 minutes of audio. They retail for $20.
Many more tours are in production, and will be added in the coming weeks, said IntelliTours founder Jim Carrier. “With this release, IntelliTours becomes the world’s largest supplier of GPS audio tours,” he said.
When downloaded into compatible Garmin navigators, including the Nuvi, the Zumo and select Streepilots, the tours play automatically as you drive past significant point of interest. The tours describe visible sites, upcoming attractions, and history where it occurred.
Professionally researched and recorded with MP3 quality sound, the tours are enhanced with sound effects and music. They play through the navigator speaker, the vehicle’s sound system, or earphones.
Carrier thanked more than 100 beta testers who, in recent months, downloaded tour samples, drove the routes, and helped fix glitches in the technology. The company’s first catalog includes 14 hours of audio and 257 tour sites.
Founded in 2004, IntelliTours creates original audio tours, and licenses third-party audio tours from partners that include Ride With Me Audio. Among the tours in production are Interstate and scenic highways, a Silicon Valley technology tour, Alabama civil rights sites and national parks.
The company and its technology have been featured on National Public Radio, the Martha Stewart XM Radio show, and in publications ranging from the Los Angeles Times to The Economist.
The downloadable tours are available to the public for personal used in privately owned navigators. In addition, IntelliTours licenses the tours to rental car agencies, tourist operators and tour buses.
